Growing Up In All Things: Crocheter Family

I remember when I was a kid, I experienced being bullied by another kid that sent me home crying. When my mother saw me crying, she said that I should not let anybody do that to me again, and if I can not protect myself and go home crying again, I should just stay home and play by myself. I was a small kid and I knew that there was a bigger possibility of this happening again. Instead of learning how to adjust to other's, I learned to stay at home alone... playing alone. Anyway there was a bonus, she told me that she can be my friend too.

In my growing up stage,I always stayed home and looked for something to keep me busy. Sometimes I read  books, learn how to do needlework and crochet. I soon discovered crochet is what I love most. Learning to crochet was, to me at my young age, my own private playground.

I don't have to go outside to play with other kids. I don't need someone to talk or chat since I was busy crocheting and counting my stitches. I had a friend who used to come visit me at times but she eventually migrated to Canada and since then I had no more friend like her. So I learned how to be alone and keep me busy by crocheting. I can stay in a room without TV set or no radio at all, as long as I have my thread/yarn and hook with me.

Now, I am longing for a friend with the same interests. I am longing for someone that I can talk to about crochet. That's the reason why I made  Crochet Lover in the Philippines, and Girlie's Crochet, a Facebook fan page. But as you can see, there are no insights there, I don't know how to start a conversation.

2 weeks ago, I received an email invitation from Chumpling Props and Crafts  Facebook fan page which was a community of crochet lovers. I thought, why not join and see for myself what it is. After joining, I start browsing their photos, gave some comments and shared some experiences. Last night before I went to bed, I started thinking about this group. I was thankful that somehow, someone had invited me to join this group. I know this is not an accident, but rather, one of God's plans and one of my purposes on this earth. To share my talent to others for the completion and perfecting of someone's talent. I remember in the bible, 1 Peter 4:10  "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms". God gave everyone a gift, that gift is our talent. Practicing and sharing our talent is one way of worshipping God.

I thank God for touching Chumpling Props and Crafts heart to invite me to this community. I grow in my talent and in someway, I gained friends, a crocheter family. I thank God also for everyday He is gracious in giving me more wisdom and enhancing my talent. Indeed we should grow up in all things. In this case my talent and family and friends are now growing.

Thank you God. Thank you Chumpling Props and Crafts. You are a blessing and an answered prayer.

  1. Hey Girlie! I didn't have the same childhood experience as you did but I totally feel you. I'm more comfortable being by myself since I was a child. I enjoy reading novels, listening to music in my room. My Mama taught me the basics of crochet when I was younger, but it didn't interest me that much then. I got curious with it when I was in college already. Reading your post, I was thinking that you're very lucky that you've enjoyed crochet when you were younger. I can be your friend, I enjoy crocheting very much. God bless you.

  4. I am here Girlie :)

I experienced bullying when I was young.. something that my mother never understood. Sometimes at work, I experience it still, but now, I know how to fight back. Like you, I learned crochet from my Mom. I also learned it at a young age. I forgot about it while growing up , I forgot about it because I came from a poor family. I don't have any money to buy me crochet thread or yarn. I kept my steel hook until college. I rediscovered crochet last 2008 and here I am now :)

I think we can relate to a lot of things , I hope to meet you one of these days :)
