Different books and websites have their own abbreviations, depending on the pattern given. Here, where you can find compilations of crochet abbreviation from them. Crochet pattern are written in special shorthand which is used so that instructions don’t take up too much space. They sometimes seem confusing, but once you learn them, you’ll have no trouble following them.

Standard Symbols:
* (asterisk) or † (dagger) … repeat the instructions following the asterisk or dagger as many times as specified.
** or †† … used for a second set of repeats within one set of instructions.
( ) parenthesis… repeat the instructions in parenthesis as many times as specified. For example: “(ch5, sc in next sc) 5 times” means to work all that is in parenthesis 5 times.
: (colon)…. The number of stitches after a colon tells you the number of stitches you will have when you have completed the row or round.
[ ] brackets and ( ) parenthesis are also used to give you additional information.
